With winter fast approaching, many are beginning to think about winter wear. This reality often brings about rather unpleasant thoughts and is dreaded by many.
However, dressing for winter doesn’t always have to be unpleasant, nor does it have to sacrifice style. Fur hats, whether made of real or synthetic fur, are a stylish way to keep warm and can add an element of chic to a bomber or goose down jacket.

This season, the Milan runways were dominated by colors and prints. Etro, a mythical Italian brand known for its jet-set chic designs, infused Oriental influences with classic Italian craftsmanship for Spring/Summer 2013. From Japan to China through Morocco and India, designer Veronica Etro stayed true to the brand’s heritage by ensuring that no one could possibly be up to par with the beautiful and rich prints showcased. And did she ever succeed. The beauty of the detailing in the prints didn’t distract from the cut and shape of the clothing. Here’s a peek…

Pour ceux et celles qui ne suivent pas de près le monde de la mode, il est difficile de comprendre le calendrier que suit cette industrie. Voici la chronologie d’une année typique en mode:
Les défilés de prêt-à-porter sont présentés 2 fois par année dans les 4 métropoles de la mode. Le premier arrêt est New York, suivi de Londres, Milan et Paris.
Les collections Automne-Hiver sont présentées à New York au mois de février et se terminent à Paris au mois de mars, afin de permettre aux créateurs de produire les morceaux commandés pour le début de l’automne de la même année.
Les collections Printemps-Été de l’année suivante (2013 en 2012, pour citer un example) sont présentées aux mois de septembre et octobre.
Les collections couture, elles, sont présentées uniquement à Paris grâce à de lois établies par la Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, qui obligent les créateurs présentant des collections à avoir un atelier parisien avec au moins 15 employés à temps plein. Deux fois par année, soit au mois de janvier et au mois de juillet, les couturiers présentent leurs collections, qui doivent comporter un minimum de 35 looks, à la presse française et à la presse internationale.

From the groovy 60′s through the eclectic 90′s and to this present day, British designers and trendsetters alike have always been at the forefront of fashion, playing an important role in making London one of the world’s leading fashion capitals.
But what is it exactly that epitomizes the laid back London look? The trench coat, of course! Frequently overcast weather and rain storms in Britain have made this item a key piece not only for those who live there but for amateurs of British fashion everywhere. Burberry and Aquascutum are perhaps the most well-known makers of trench coats, but many other designers both on the high-street and the designer market have struck the perfect note in creating their signature trenches.
Another trend we have to thank London for? The punk-chic look. The area of North London has molded itself into the epicenter of punk fashion, with the Camden market being the ultimate destination for all things punk and edgy.
London is also home to many designers of foreign origin, such as Serbian designer Roksanda Ilincic, Greek designer Mary Katrantzou and Canadian-born British-Turkish designer Erdem Moralioglu (behind the Erdem label), all of which represent a perfect marriage between their culture and the quintessential London appeal in their collections.
Aujourd’hui plus que jamais auparavant, la distinction entre les collections de haute couture et de prêt-à-porter se fait de plus en plus difficile à établir. La raison est simple; les grandes soirées se font plus rares, et les codes vestimentaires deviennent par conséquent plus décontractés.
Pour s’adapter aux besoins des clients, les maisons doivent proposer des choix plus versatiles mais encore à la hauteur de la haute couture. Comment donc offrir le parfait union entre ces deux courants bipolaires? La réponse se trouve dans le processus de création, plus précisément dans l’attention portée aux détails du morceau. Pour ses collections couture, la maison Chanel sous-traite une partie de ses tâches à la maison Lemarié, qui produit depuis les années 60 les camélias abondamment utilisées chez Chanel. Spécialistes en matière de plumes et de fleurs, les artisans de la maison Lemarié produisent aussi des embellissements pour les maisons Dior, Lacroix, Givenchy et Balenciaga parmi d’autres. La maison Massaro, quant à elle, se targue de produire les chaussures pour les défilés de haute couture Chanel. Portant une attention aux détails hors pair, la maison parisienne ne produit que 1 000 paires de chaussures par année (comparés aux 600 000 chez Christian Louboutin).
La réponse à la question, ce qui élève la mode à la haute couture, est sans doute le procédé méticuleux de création observé dans le mode d’emploi de ces deux maisons mythiques.

The Fall 2012 season changed the face of haute couture. Newcomers including Ulyana Sergeenko, Maison Martin Margiela and Raf Simons in his new role as head designer of la maison Dior made their first appearance on the couture scene and left a significant impact.
Russian couture collector turner designer Ulyana Sergeenko centered in on what is perhaps the theme she knows best and is closest to when preparing her first couture show: home. It is evident when looking through the various looks from the show that she was greatly inspired by her native Russia, sending unique and mystical pieces with a modern edge down the runway. She kept with a rather plain colour scheme, exploring only as far as a bright cherry red while opting to work mainly with white, grey and black. Fur was also a popular theme, along with military inspired coats that are sure to be a huge hit come fall. Ulyana Sergeenko did a terrific job in staying true to the aesthetics that make her homeland so unique and capturing it in a way that it is beautiful even to those who have no historic ties to Russia.
Short and very, very sweet was the couture collection created by Maison Martin Margiela. Composed of only 15 looks, the collection may have been smaller compared to those of bigger fashion houses, but the quintessential MMM DNA was all over the runway. However, it was the avant-garde motifs that stole the show. Below are my personal favourites of this “Artisanal” collection, chosen for their simplicity and their being exactly what modern couture should be: classic, wearable and provocative to the right extent.
Last but not least, Raf Simons and his first couture collection since taking over at Dior. Although exquisitely beautiful and sure to be a great hit as it is very wearable, I found this collection to be much more RTW than Haute Couture, leaving me to wonder what he will be presenting at his ready-to-wear début this fall. Black smokings are always chic and were perfectly executed, but I feel as though there was an element missing in this collection, the one that makes couture so unique and sought after. Voici l’histoire de la ballerine. Détrompez-vous si vous vous attendiez à un récit sur l’histoire de la danseuse de ballet, car je parle plutôt de ballerines, magnifiques petites chaussures élégantes et féminines pour lesquelles on pourrait presque délaisser les talons à jamais. Presque.
Non seulement les ballerines sont-elles une merveilleuse alternative aux talons, mais elles sont parfois une meilleure alternative. Rien n’est moins chic qu’une femme qui ne sait pas marcher en talons, et après une longue journée, quoi de mieux qu’une belle petite paire de ballerines pour soulager ses pieds sans compromettre son ensemble? Que l’on soit grande ou petite, ronde ou svelte, une jolie paire, classique ou branchée, est l’addition ultime à une garde-robe.
Dérivées de chaussons de danse, les ballerines existent depuis la nuit des temps, soit depuis le 16e siècle. En 1932, Jacob Bloch ouvrit son premier atelier de confection de ballerines et peu après, l’italienne Rose Repetto s’est jointe à lui pour créer à son tour des ballerines signées de sa touche personnalisée. Aujourd’hui, Bloch et Repetto sont des noms mythiques et demeurent toujours parmi les plus populaires, se joignant au rang des petits nouveaux, dont Lanvin, Chanel, Pretty Ballerinas et French Sole.

A single year in fashion represents an ever-changing cycle of themes, trends and colors. As anticipated every season, there are always those few recurring classics that stick it out year after year, usually presented to us as a rendering of the designer’s vision at that particular time. Basics, as we name them. For 2012, these can safely be defined as pastels and prints, with an abundance of each on runways and red carpets.
This past year, the industry itself has been through its fair share of ups and downs, from the whole Dior saga to the revamping of old fashion houses. These past few seasons have been monumental for revived fashion label Vionnet, whereas classic and established houses such as YSL and Jil Sander chose this year as a time of change and rebirth, both replacing their head designers.
My first post, on May 31st 2011, covered my favorite look from the 2011 amfAR Gala from Cannes and was the beginning of what would turn out to be a passion of mine. To celebrate this milestone, I present you with my favorite look from the 2012 edition of the amfAR Gala. Not so surprisingly (to myself at least), I have chosen Diane Kruger in Chanel.
Stunning in this fresh of the runway Chanel Cruise dress, which she accessorized with glitzy Louboutins and a silver clutch, Diane stood out from the crowd not only for the elegance with which she wore the dress but also for the added touch of old world glamour with her wavy hairstyle and earrings. As a jury member at this year’s Cannes Festival, Diane wowed with every look, striking the perfect note at every occasion and presenting us with her own twist on the season’s latest and greatest trends (pastels and florals included)!

Une fois par an, célébrités de la mode et du showbiz, éditeurs, créateurs et stylistes se réunissent sous un même toit, celui du Musée Métropolitain d’Art de New York, pour célébrer l’ouverture d’une exposition dédiée à la mode à l’aide d’un somptueux bal. Cette année, le Costume Institute présente “Schiaparelli et Prada: Impossible Conversations”.
Pour honorer ces créateurs légendaires, plusieurs se sont données rendez-vous le 7 mai dernier au Met Ball, qui est organisé en partenariat avec le magazine américain Vogue. Mes coups de coeur de la soirée? Bianca Brandolini d’Adda en Dolce & Gabbana et Diane Kruger en Prada.
